University of Toledo Master Plan
In its quest for ongoing improvement, the University of Toledo has partnered with SmithGroup to make regular updates to its campus plan. Currently, the University is implementing many aspects of its 2016 multiple campus master plan update (developed by SmithGroup), including consolidating, and relocating key campus functions as part of its goal to enhance operational efficiencies and improve utilization, reducing unnecessary maintenance costs, and improving the campus configuration to enhance the student and faculty experience.
The latest update identifies strategies for optimal use of the physical space on campus to best serve its students in the coming decades. Building off the 2016 plan, the 2023 plan update examines the academic programs and administrative functions housed on campus, builds on the University’s strengths and its core STEM curricula, and fosters new public partnerships that provide students with real-world experience and work environments.
Through a partnership with regional healthcare provider ProMedica, the College of Medicine and Life Sciences relocated to the ProMedica Toledo Hospital campus, giving students on-site medical training in high-acuity clinical care. The move also strengthened the College’s allied health programs at its existing Health Sciences campus, home to the University of Toledo Medical Center and the state-of-the-art Interprofessional Immersive Simulation Center. The College of Engineering is on the edge of the Main Campus in a former research and development center where it can take advantage of high-bay industrial labs and maker spaces.
Additional space strategies include shifting administrative and other non-academic entities off the core campus to focus on services that more directly benefit the student, including upgrades to the library and student union, new collaboration and social spaces, and more dining options. Space gained on campus is also slated for community partnerships with local community colleges, local municipalities, and service agencies. By reallocating physical campus space and creating new opportunities with community partners, the University of Toledo is preparing its students and the institution for a bright future.
