When Jessica enters a building, she instinctively looks up. "The first place a surface acoustical treatment can go on is typically the ceiling," she says matter-of-factly. As someone who specializes in acoustics, Jessica recognizes that her work is often not noticed. “The aural environment is one that most people take for granted, yet it has been shown to raise or relieve stress,” she says. “The world is such a noisy place. I try to design spaces to bring greater comfort in the aural environment to help make the world a quieter place wherever I can." Jessica is a musician and considered becoming a professional flutist—but the vocation didn't include her other true passion, math. So, when a physics teacher introduced her to acoustics, "I was hooked,” she recalls. “Here was music and math, engineering and art, all in one place. To this day designing music rehearsal rooms brings me great joy, knowing I’m making practice easier and better for another young musician.” Jessica is an active member of the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), volunteering on the Technical Committees on Architectural Acoustical and Noise, and currently serves as chair of Women in Acoustics. She enjoys teaching acoustics, where she guest lectures at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Kennesaw State University. “The students ask amazing, thought-provoking questions. I hope to inspire the next generation of acousticians.”
